York Township is a political subdivision of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. In our commonwealth, first class townships were created as a special category in 1899.
The legislative intent was to allow townships with relatively dense residential development additional powers to provide municipal services such as water, sewer and police forces to these areas.
Over the years first class townships received additional powers and in 1937 gained substantial protection from annexation by neighboring cities and boroughs through approval of the voters of the entire township in a referendum.
